This book gives you all aspects of addiction and recovery. Thank you Bill for being a pioneer in this recovery movement!! THANK YOU!!!!

This inspiring and courageous memoir probes the intimate details of a family devastated by the disease of alcoholism, and blessed by recovery.

Borchert wrote the screenplay of My Name Is Bill W, the most-watched television movie ever made. “I am a fan of neither pain nor discomfort, which is what this effort of disgorging the past entailed,”

Borchert reports. “But some very good friends finally convinced me over a period of time that sharing my own experiences, in addition to the generous input from those in my family closest to me, could offer hope to other alcoholics and show families devastated by the disease that there is a way out.

In an age when there are still more than 44,000,000 alcoholics affecting at least eight others around them, over 200,000,000 people are looking for help. That is a plague. My personal experience with this disease proves there is help available as well as a pathway to a new life beyond their wildest dreams.”

The author of eight books and producer of other successful films, Borchert not only wrote the Bill W story about the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous, starring James Woods, James Garner and JoBeth Williams but also the highly acclaimed movie, When Love Is Not Enough, about the founding of Al-Anon, starring Winona Ryder and Barry Pepper. The author and screenwriter said his new book was by its very nature even more difficult to write.

A MUST READ...what an inspiring, heart wrenching story of a beautiful family torn apart by alcoholism and then put back together by recovery. I was deeply touched to learn the details and have an inside look into the life of Bill Borchert. This story left me in awe. Bill Borchert is Uncle Bill to me...My husband Frank has always spoke so highly of his uncle Bill and I’m thankful that uncle Bill was able to write such an emotional and courageous story that has touched the lives of thousands of people.

I have struggled this year to stay in Alanon. After reading this book I realize I need to stay in the middle of this program and continue to be transparent. Becky Ray
Awesome! Says it like it is! Can totally relate to the whole book!!! Thanks Bill for your honest, straight from your heart sharing of both your own and societies struggle with addiction!!
Must Read! The author has a wonderful way of weaving his story through history...and a wonderful way of showing how an alcoholic can skip a few years (during that history) with an addiction to booze. Is there hope? Is there a way? Read and find out...
Wonderful book. This book shows the hopelessness of a family ravished by alcoholism but then shows the hope in recovery. The family all got sick from alcoholism but then shows how they got well together. Very well written. Very helpful to any family in recovery that needs a good dose of HOPE!
An emotional and informative reading experience for anyone interested in alcoholism. Bill, in his writing, vividly portrays how alcoholism not only affects the individual but also those around. The expressive sharing of his thoughts, emotions, and perception carried me on an emotional roller coaster from beginning to end. Following explicit details of personal and family devastation is a wonderful message of hope for those whose lives have been touched by this disease.
What a gift to write "How I Became My Father...A Drunk." Incredibly real, honest and horrific. How many have thought "I will never be like him" - "it is different with me?" I can only pray this powerful book will be a wake up call to many. There is a way out. God bless you Bill for having the courage to share such intimate details with the world. Now we need a book by Bernadette.
Reviewed by Bill Donovan, using Lisa's computer. First of all, I know William, and have known him for 40+ years. And reading the book, I have met William's Dad, during his sober years. This book will be great for someone who grew up with problem drinking in the home, for the identification factor of not being alone. Others have lived through the alcohol nightmare. Myself, I am an alcoholic, and lived through it, and got sober young.
I am half way through the book as of the writing of this review. Looking forward to the rest of the adventure.
